GSA - Winter League 2008/09 - League Forum

I know I've asked this in the past, but what do you think is the best number of teams per division in the winter leagues ? - you can let me know via the contact us page on the website and I'll add your comments to this discussion thread.

Although I think the ideal number of teams per league is 12, I'm  not sure we'd be able to make that work with the current set-up. There are currently 39 teams across 4 leagues, with only 9 of them in the Premier - if we went to 3 leagues of 12, would we be able to persuade another 3 teams to enter the premier?

One option would be to move to a smaller number of teams in the premier (8?) with them playing each other 3 times in the season. Then run a further 3 leagues of 12 by following the Premier League lead of 4 man teams, to allow clubs to enter additional teams - we'd all get in the bar sooner too!?

I have mentioned before about the rules on VAT and that a minimum of 10 bookings have to be made in order to get court fees ex VAT.  With two teams in the leagues it would be nice to have 10 home matches each half (5 per team) i.e. 11 teams in each league.  The Christmas break means that the two halves would have to be treated separately for VAT purposes.  This last league we arranged friendlies to make up the required number of bookings.  I will have to do something similar for the Summer League.

No less than 12 teams in a league to make sure the season lasts long enough. The only other option is less teams but play each other 3 times.

I think 12 is the minimum to be aimed for with a shorter break over xmas and finishing arround april

My thoughts on your question are - as many as possible - people tend to prefer as short a winter break as possible.

I think(stroud D) that 10 to 12 teams per division is about optimal.Any less then 3 x 8 worked ok in Div 3

Steve Kellengray - Wotton - 16th March

The amount of teams we prefer (Wotton) is between 10-12. It makes the season not too long or short.

Cheers,

Steve.

A personal view - 12 - 9 or 10 is too few and we either start too late or end too early.

I think 12 or 13 teams in a league is good.

This will allow for a September start and mid December half way finish, starting up again in January and finishing around Easter time.
