The England Squash National Cup. The National Cup is now into its fourth year.  It is a competition for all premier division county league winners to go on and compete against each other at a national level.  Since its inception the competition has been run from April each year with a Finals Weekend being staged in July.  Whilst the event format and concept has been successful and welcomed by many the timing of it has caused problems and has prevented some clubs from competing.  To address this England Squash has decided to run the event from September and culminate in a Finals Weekend prior to Christmas.  This will keep the event within the normal squash season and should encourage greater player availability.  Hence all premier division county winners from the 2008/9 season will now qualify for the National Cup 2009 which will kick off in September.  It would be appreciated if this could be forwarded and promoted within your county league structure so that clubs can plan for it should they qualify.  For further details please contact paul.houghton@englandsquash.com Tel: 0161 438 4315.

UKCC Courses proving a big hit in the South West

Level 1 and 2 Squash Coaching courses are being planned and delivered with huge success across the region with courses being run in Exeter, Bristol and Dorchester. In collaboration with County Sports Partnerships and Skills Active many candidates are receiving financial support to aid them in their quest to become top coaches. If anyone is interested in attending one of these courses please visit www.englandsquash.com and visit the coaching section.

The big majority of league matches are played in a friendly but competitive and good spirited manner. However, I'm sure we have all from time to time winced at a player's behaviour, manner or utterances on court. So, what exactly do the rules state about conduct on court, and what powers does the marker/referee have to ensure the appropriate behaviour is maintained ?

Rule 17 ( Conduct on Court ) of the 'Rules of World Singles Squash 2001' can be stated briefly as :

Offensive, disruptive or intimidating behaviour in squash is not acceptable.

Included in this category are: audible and visible obscenities, verbal and physical abuse, dissent, abuse of racket, court or ball, unnecessary physical contact, excessive racket swing, unfair warm-up, time-wasting, late back on court, deliberate or dangerous play or action and coaching (except between games).

The Referee is in Control ...

The rule also states that the referee can warn the player, allow a let to their opponent, or award a stroke, a game or the match depending on the severity of the incident. These are known as a conduct warning, conduct stroke, game or match.

The GSA periodically arrange marking and refereeing courses, and we encourage you all to attend whenever possible. Only in this way can we ensure the standard of marking is consistent, fair and of a high standard throughout the whole league. If during the next match you are marking the standard of behaviour of the players involved does not come up to scratch - then don't hesitate to use your powers to bring them back into line !

New League Rules for 2008/09

Certain league rules were amended at the recent AGM. The changes are listed below, however if you wish to field juniors (U18's) in your team next year then please see the new child protection policy ruling. You or one of your team members will have to apply for a CRB - if you do not already have one - in order to supervise the junior if they are NOT accompanied by their parent or guardian at matches. Contact me asap if you need to do this.

Many thanks to those of you who attended the AGM, and to Matt Baker from England Squash for his participation. As always, the committee would welcome anyone who feels they can spare a little time to come and help out.

There were several amendments to the winter league rules approved by the AGM.

(1) The 'child protection' policy was approved with several changes. If the parent or guardian is not available to supervise the child (under 18) playing in a match, then the nominated adult who is to supervise the child must hold a CRB. England Squash have agreed to help with this process - they will provide the application form, the adult can be apply as a 'squash volunteer', and ES will help towards the cost of the application. If this affects you and your team for next season then please contact me asap. The club which has teams with children will have to hold a form for each child, signed by their parent or guardian giving their permission for their child to play in the senior league. Such a form will be available from the GSA shortly. In addition, the GSA would encourage all clubs to adopt a child protection policy and code of conduct standard.

(2) The new point system for walkovers was approved. A team will be deducted one point for each member they fail to field. If a fixture is not played, the team claiming the w/o will be awarded 15 points (or 12 in the premier) and the other team will be deducted 5 points (4 in the premier.)

(3) The suggested formal complaint procedure was also adopted.

League Rule Additional Changes

The members of the premier division voted to adopt the point a rally to 11 scoring system for the 2008/09  season. (increased to 15 for the second half, with a two point lead if 14/14 is reached.)
